Across displacement camps in the Gaza Strip, thousands of families are living in extremely difficult humanitarian conditions, lacking access to basic services such as electricity, water, and nighttime lighting. With the continued and complete power outage, daily life for displaced families has become a constant struggle, particularly for women, children, the elderly, and persons with disabilities.
The absence of electricity means more than darkness. It means limited access to water, unsafe conditions at night, and the inability to charge mobile phones and essential devices needed for communication and emergency situations.
In response to this urgent humanitarian need, Gaza Electricity Distribution Company (GEDCO) is implementing this campaign to provide integrated off-grid solar power systems in displacement camps, ensuring the operation of essential services that help restore safety, dignity, and basic living conditions for displaced families.
🔹 Project Components
Each solar power system is designed as an integrated solution to support the camp by providing three essential services simultaneously:
A small solar-powered water pump to supply water from an existing source and reduce the daily burden on displaced families, especially women and children.
Solar-powered nighttime lighting, using LED fixtures to illuminate camp pathways and surrounding areas for at least eight hours per night, enhancing safety and reducing risks after sunset.
A communal charging station that enables families to charge mobile phones and essential devices, ensuring communication and access to emergency support.
🔹 System Capacity (Simplified)
Each solar power system is designed with an operating capacity of approximately 5 kW, supported by solar panels and battery storage sufficient to operate the water pump, nighttime lighting, and charging station. The system includes battery storage that allows continuous operation for up to two days in the absence of sunlight.
🔹 Phase One Scope
This campaign represents Phase One of a scalable and replicable project and includes:
Installation of 15 off-grid solar power systems
One system serving each displacement camp
Direct benefit to approximately 300–500 displaced persons per site
A total of 4,500–7,500 direct beneficiaries during Phase One
The project is designed for expansion to additional camps as further funding becomes available.
